FBI 'Bot Roast II' Nails Eight
Action against eight people for various botnet-related criminal offenses capped off another round of investigations by federal law enforcement into over $20 million in losses and over a million compromised PCs.
Botherding became a little less profitable for eight people named in a Federal Bureau of Investigation statement. The second pahse of an ongoing probe into botnets, dubbed Bot Roast II, reached targets in the US and abroad. One example cited by the FBI noted cooperation between the Bureau and authorities in New Zealand, where law enforcement executed a search warrant against the suspected ringleader of an international group of botnet operators. The report also noted the case of John Schiefer, who pleaded guilty in Los Angeles to four felony counts. Schiefer's case was the first in the US where botnet activities earned the accused a charge under a federal wiretap statute. "Practicing strong computer security habits such as updating anti-virus software, installing a firewall, using strong passwords, and employing good e-mail and web security practices are as basic as putting locks on your doors and windows," said FBI assistant director James Finch, of the Agency's Cyber Division.

YouTube Debates Feature Republicans Tonight
After Democratic candidates answered questions submitted through YouTube in July, their Republican counterparts agreed to participate in the same format.
Whatever one's thoughts may have been about the Democratic version of the YouTube debate on July 23rd, the Republicans will have their chance to take part in this Internet-fueled experiment in participatory democracy.
CNN will begin airing the YouTube Debate this evening, with questions coming from people submitting them on video via Google’s sharing service.
Google policy counsel Pablo Chavez said on the company's Public Policy Blog nearly 5,000 questions had been submitted for consideration.
"And with a little more than a month before the first votes are cast in the Iowa caucuses, the debate promises fireworks as each of the candidates tries to set himself apart in one of the most competitive and least settled primary races in the Republican party's history," said Chavez.

Yahoo Apologizes For Merchant Outage
The Monday after Thanksgiving contained a hellish several hours for Yahoo and merchants on its order fulfillment platform.
Cyber Monday may as well have been a day where Freddy Kruger, Michael Myers, and Jason Voorhees all stopped by Yahoo's small business operations and killed various merchants in graphic and creative ways.
We will give Yahoo's Rich Riley credit for stepping up today, with a mea culpa on Yahoo's official blog about the problems. He offered apologies for the terrible, horrible, no good very bad day, but did not provide details as to what happened or why.
"On Monday at 6:00AM PT, the systems that power our merchant stores experienced outages, and shoppers of those stores were met with either error messages or they were unable to complete the checkout process," he wrote.
"These issues lasted until about 1:00PM PT when, despite slow performance, transactions began going through at a much higher rate. By 6:00 PM PT things were back to normal and the performance of our systems was at 100%."
Small business customers commenting on Riley's post were not happy with the lack of disclosure over what happened, nor Yahoo's failure to publicize a workaround related to the checkout process that other merchants happened upon on a support forum.
Some noted the rollout of a new cross-selling feature before Thanksgiving, and suggested it was responsible for the problems as traffic began to arrive at merchant sites. Another noted sites using an older checkout process had no downtime issues.
"This outage cost us big time in terms of money, our time and customer goodwill," Craig Clark said in the comments.
As bad as this outage was, at least it did not happen later in December, when shoppers do a lot more buying. Cyber Monday, for all of its hype, is a marketing term created a couple of years ago. Merchants should see more business, barring any more outages, in the days closer to Christmas.

Book Promotion Recommendations
Recommended Books from BiggerBooks.com Here are some books that are really moving well for BiggerBooks this month!!! Conversations With Yogananda: Recorded, with Reflections by his disciple Swami Kriyananda (J. donald Walters) - Author: Kriyananda, Swami Synopsis: Come sit at the feet of the Master! Yogananda is one of the world's most respected spiritual masters. His Autobiography of a Yogi helped stimulate a spiritual awakening in the West and a spiritual renaissance in his native India. This firsthand account of Yogananda and his teachings by one of his closest students includes not only Yogananda's words as originally spoken, but also the added insight of a disciple who has reflected on and practiced these teachings for over 50 years: $10.28 Sayings of Paramahansa Yogananda - Author: Yogananda, Paramahansa Synopsis: This collection of informal counsel provides intimate glimpses into the mind of one of the great spiritual figures of our time. In answering the questions of those who turned to him for guidance, Yogananda expressed himself with candor, spontaneity, and insight. He knew when to relieve a somber situation with a flash of wit, and was able to transform philosophical truths into simple precepts for everyday living: $9.17 Autobiography of a Yogi - Author: Yogananda, Paramahansa Synopsis: "...an eyewitness recountal of the extraordinary lives and powers of modern Hindu saints, the book has importance both timely and timeless. Yogananda's unusual life-document is certainly one of the most revealing of the Hindu mind and heart, and of the most revealing of the Hindu mind and heart, and of the spiritual wealth of India, ever to be published in the West". -- W.Y. Evans-Weltz, M.A., D.Litt., D.Sc., Jesus College, Oxford; Author of The Tibetan Book of the Dead
Followers of many religious traditions have come to recognize this book as a masterpiece of spiritual literature. Paramhansa Yogananda was the first yoga master of India whose mission it was to live and teach in the West. In the 1920's, as he criss-crossed the United States on what he called his "spiritual campaigns" his enthusiastic audiences filled the largest halls in America. His first-hand account of his life experiences includes childhood revelations, his visits to saints and masters of India, the years of training he received in the ashram of his guru, and long-secret teachings of Self-realization that he made available to the Western reader.
This is a verbatim reprinting of the original 1946 edition. Although subsequent reprintings, reflecting revisions made after the author's death in 1952, have sold over a million copies and have been translated into more than 19 languages, the few thousand of the original have long since disappeared into the hands of collectors. Now the 1946 edition is again available, with all its inherent power, just as the great master of yoga first presented it. A treasure for truthseekers!
"In the original edition, coming from that period of Yogananda's life, one is more in contactwith Yogananda himself. It is prior to his institutionalization that often follows many great personalitites once they have passed on. The following is a good example of how Yogananda's original statement differs from later editions in a way that appears to limit the teachings of his lineage to those of a particular organization (changes noted in underline):
"Original (1946) edition: 'The actual technique (of Kriya Yoga) must be learned from a Kriyaban or Kriya Yogi; here a broad reference must suffice.'
"1981 edition: 'The actual technique (of Kriya Yoga) should be learned from an authorized Kriyaban (Kriya Yogi) of Self-Realization Fellowship (Yogoda Satsanga Society of India). Here a broad reference must suffice.'
"Yogananda had many disciples of his own, and there were also many disciples of Kriya Yoga from other teachers in his lineage, apart from any single organization or institution. While Yogananda founded centers and organizations, his concern was more with guiding individuals to direct communion with Divinity rather than with promoting any one church as opposed to another. This spirit is easier to grasp in the original edition of this great spiritual and yogic classic". -- Dr. David Frawley, author of Ayurvedic Healing, Director, American Institute of Vedic Studies: $9.55 Not Yet a BiggerBook Affiliate? News Corp Schemes An Online Ad Network
The broadening growth of Fox Interactive Media's many properties has prompted News Corp to prepare FIM Serve, an online ad network, for deployment in and out of the company's Internet reach.
As those who have followed the saga of Google bidding $3.1 million to acquire DoubleClick know, Google has billed the deal as one that brings companies with vastly different ad operations together. Google does search ads, DoubleClick does display ads, so the FTC and the European Competition Commission should not have a problem.
Google's favorite mantra may come back to haunt them, as it appears Rupert Murdoch and FIM president Peter Levinsohn realize the old rule about playing with house money applies to Internet advertising just as it does at the casinos. Levinsohn told Reuters Media Summit attendees that FIM Serve, an in-house display ad network, was under construction:
"Ultimately we'll take the company off network and become an ad network for assets outside of the News Corporation empire."
"It could happen as early as the first half of next year," he said. "We're ready to go ... we're starting to have conversations outside now." Levinsohn also said FIM Serve would not conflict with their Google deal, citing the separation of graphical display and contextual search advertising. That could be news to Google, which obviously hopes to do more display ads with DoubleClick's network than it currently achieves through its AdSense network.

Browsing With iPhone Is Abject Faliure
"Even the iPhone’s browser can disappoint. It has a version of the Apple Safari browser that doesn’t support Flash, a programming language widely used on Web sites, so users are limited in what they can see on the Web. And, you pay a lot to experience the pain of surfing the mobile Web. Lewis Ward, an analyst at the International Data Corporation, compares the mobile Web today to AOL before it went with flat-rate pricing in the early 1990s. Most people surf on a pay-per-kilobyte model, which encourages them to surf as fast as they can, he says." An article out from the New York Times entitled "Mobile Web: So Close Yet So Far" talks about how disappointing the mobile web experience has largely been for consumers thus far. While I can only speak as one U.S. consumer using one U.S. web based phone (the iPhone), I will chalk the internet browsing experience on my iPhone after several months now as an abject failure. As much as I love the iPhone, and it is the best mobile phone I've ever used, the web browsing on it leaves so much to be desired. AT&T's sucky "Edge" network is not worth using at all. Unless you are really in a pinch and absolutely must get somethign from the web it simply is not worth using. When I got my iPhone I thought that browsing the web was one of the big things that I'd be doing with it. I do not do this at all. A case in point. I whip out my iPhone as I'm heading up the escalator at the West Oakland BART station and try to go to a web page. There is no train at the landing yet. The iPhone fires up like it's going to load but then it just moves so slow. Maybe a minute later the train arrives. I hop in. My page still has not loaded. The train pulls forward. It's probably a good half mile and maybe another minute and a half before the train pulls into the tunnel that goes under the Bay (where I lose all internet access). Still no web page loads. Now I'm under the Bay after about 3 minutes or so of waiting and I've given up. After about 5 days in a row of this performance I simply stop trying to use my iPhone on the way to work. This is disappointing because I would like to have read an article on the iPhone on my way to work during the 8 minutes or so I'm under the Bay in the BART tunnel. While it is true that you can use wi-fi with the iPhone this is kind of stupid. Why? Because in general it's too much work to screw around trying to find unsecure wifi spots to use. In the few places (like home) where you *know* you have wifi, you don't need to be on your iPhone when your MacBook Pro is a much more suitable way to browse the web. Yes, there is the occasional occurrence when you are standing in North Beach and want to call the sushi restaurant to inquire about dinner and you're willing to wait the 3 minutes plus to get the phone number on your iPhone. But as for general web surfability? I'd rather surf my first ever AOL dial up connection than AT&T's "Edge" network. And it's a big disappointment to me that the iPhone disappoints so much in terms of internet useage as this is something that I was actually very much looking forward to doing with it when I shelled out the $700 to buy it in the first place. And before you say $700 - $100 (generous rebate gift certificate sort of thing back) = $600 not $700, not in my case. Apple's "generous" $100 rebate code didn't work for me in the store when I tried to use it and I've yet to get around to trying to figure out who to deal with on that one. Comment ...

Google I'm Feeling Lucky Button Nostalgia?
The I Feel Lucky button on the Google keyword search page has been there forever.
Many have questioned its utility given that even Google acknowledges few people click on it. Perhaps it's nostalgia on the part of the two founders. Perhaps it's a subtle marketing ploy to encourage the notion that Google always gets it right. It does seem somewhat of an enigma. Brendan Newnam decided to find out why it still hangs around. One interesting finding in his article comes from Tom Chavez, the head of Rapt, a company that helps determine what advertising real estate on a Web page is worth. He did the math on how much the 1% of people who use the button are costing the company. Google makes a lot of its money by selling ads on its search results page.
People who are "feeling lucky" never see such a page and therefore Google's ads. The "I'm Feeling Lucky" button automatically directs them to a non-Google web page. He estimates that Google loses $110 million of revenue per year by leaving the button for this 1% of visitors. That's a huge loss for a button that no one seems able to defend.

Bonnie Brown On Massaging Google Geeks
Bonnie Brown was working as massage therapist at Google from 1999 to 2004. Before that, she ran a private school for 10 years. Now, Bonnie is traveling and also wrote a book called Giigle: How I Got Lucky Massaging Google. I met up with her on Google Talk (the transcript below has spellchecking and punctuation added).
Hi Bonnie! Good morning. Where are you at the moment? Are you doing interviews all week for your book? I’m in Nevada entertaining family and friends for the holidays. It’s been a very busy week interviewing and setting up interviews for the coming weeks. Did you find a publisher for the book yet? Decided to publish it myself for now. Ah... do you want to use some online service for that or...? I have speaking engagements coming up, so it looks like I have a venue to sell the book through my website and at book signings. I want to go back to the beginning of your work for Google. That was in 1999 right? Correct. At the time, did any of your friends actually know about the company? No, and I had never heard of Google Did you check out their site to prepare for the job interview? Like, try a search on google.com....? No, frankly I was pretty computer illiterate! Did you have a computer at the time? Yes. Your job started out as part-time, 10 hours a week. What did you do the other time? I had a massage business in Silicon Valley that was just starting out. I had private clients and did massage for other businesses. Were many of your clients from tech startups back then? I did massage for Tibco. But mostly trade shows, parties, random small business. But a lot of my clients were in the tech business. You mentioned before that massaging the Google employees was a bit different. They are all very geeky, I suppose. What was that like? Well, first of all, they are socially shy for the most part. They are very involved with their work so not a lot of time for interpersonal relationships. For those reasons, they told me they lacked touch in their lives and really enjoyed massage because they felt something that was missing. Plus, they suffered from the stressed associated with working on a computer all day (and night). They had wrist, neck and back problems. I see. The massage you are doing is them lying face down on a bed, right? Yes, they start face down on a massage table with a place for their face that is comfortable. Then the flip over and I work on their head neck and limbs from that angle. They are draped the whole time with sheets. Sometimes being “socially shy” or let’s say unaware of certain social etiquette can lead to unwanted rudeness... did this ever happen to you at Google?
“One time an engineer explained to me that they see no need for small talk, so if they never look at me then they could avoid that.” I had a hard time adjusting to some not looking me in the eyes. One time an engineer explained to me that they see no need for small talk, so if they never look at me then they could avoid that. That’s interesting. I’ve met many engineers/ developers who also frown on small talk. Did you talk a lot with them during massages though? Or does it depend on the client? Yes, many of the Googlers fell asleep because their workload was so intense that when they finally stopped for a break, they just shut down. Heh. But at first, when they were nervous about the whole thing, they talked to get to know me and build trust. Were they ever starting tech talk, and you had to stop them half-way through? Actually, I learned a lot from them about the search engine, science, life from their perspective and loved talking with them. They were really intelligent and though I had a hard time understanding some of what they were expressing, I felt like I grew a lot from my experience with them. OK. So in the beginning, there were like 40 employees with you, right? Did you massage all of them, like Sergey Brin, Larry Page...? Yes, mostly all of them. Sergey and Larry included. Did they sometimes seek your perspective too? Like ask for advice? Well, considering the age difference, yes, they did consider my life experiences valuable and I think I taught them also. When the company grew, did you swich to a full-time job with Google? It was never a set, full time experience, because I was a contractor. I set my own hours, but the demand grew so great that I was working 5 days a week at the end. And then someday the employees had to pay a fee for the formerly free massages for them, right? To cut down on demand...? At first it was free, but I was booked 6 months in advance. It was hard for the new people to get an appointment. So, they instituted a co-pay and it slowed it down for a very short time, but that didn’t last long. As a joke, people were offering their options to get a spot on the calendar. Heh. I bet with that workload and the type of work, you were able to arm-wrestle down most male employees of the company :) I think I was very popular. I could always cut in line in the lunch room and no one complained. What’s the Google cafeteria like? And with whom would you usually sit down together? Charlie [Ayers] made incredible food. Organic and extremely healthy. Great soups that we could take home after work in a Chinese take out container! I never visited the grocery store in those days. I ate with anybody and everybody. So the co-founders sit down, and people take a seat next to them. But I suppose that was not like that anymore after a couple of years...?
“I had a guest for lunch and Sergey was at the next table. He got up right in the middle of eating and started doing push ups on the floor. He had some kind of bet going with the people at his table. My guest was pretty surprised.” The CEO, Eric, Sergey and Larry all ate with the rest of us. I’ve had lunch with them all. It is very relaxed. Once, I had a guest for lunch and Sergey was at the next table. He got up right in the middle of eating and started doing push ups on the floor. He had some kind of bet going with the people at his table. My guest was pretty surprised. How were new employees introduced to others at the time? I mean, when there were just hundred or more around. Was there a formal introduction? It’s hard for me to say. My position there was removed from the “teams.” I worked on everyone, but on a very individual basis. They had a meeting every Friday where I believe most introductions took place. I was ALWAYS doing massage, so hardly ever could attend. Did you have a computer at work where you could check out e.g. the intranet MOMA and the employee profile pages for everyone? Yes. My office had a computer that showed the schedule for massage and the intranet. Did the intranet news interest you? Or I suppose you were always busy anyway... It was very interesting. I read when I could. Every now and then someone missed their appointment and I had a break. Did the atmosphere and buzz change when new products or sites were about to be rolled out? Yes. As you probably know, they go by an 80/20 rule there. 20% of their time is used for creating new ideas. There were so many interesting things going on all the time, it seemed like there was no lack of excitement. Did you have your own 20% time? :) Are you kidding? NO! My job needed no more creativity. It was very intuitive and I gave it my all. I wanted to ask, what was the weirdest thing that happened during your work with Google over the years? If you read the book, you’ll find out! Heh, OK. Did you ever meet celebrities at Google? Yes, I met Al Gore. Oh yeah, and Ben Affleck. In 2004, Google went public. You had some stock options from the beginning of your job right? Yes, I was offered options on an ongoing basis throughout my work there. At what point in time did you realize, I’m probably ending up a millionaire here thanks to these options? Toward the middle of 2003, it started to look pretty promising. But I’m an optimist and I hoped for the moon right from the start. It was you who pushed for options, I understand... in the beginning... Yes, I asked for that in my contract. During the build-up to the IPO, what was it like? The New York Times estimated Google produced as many as 1000 or more millionaires. Was that time in any way weird? I talk a lot about the build up in Giigle. It was a very stressful time. The quiet period required by the SEC was painfully quiet. Except for an interview by the co-founders with Playboy... True, true. Everyone makes an error now and then. :) A couple of months later, you left Google. Why? My hands hurt. Seriously, it was just time. The company inevitably would grow more “corporate” and the feeling of the start-up changed. I felt it was time to start something else. Yeah, I heard today at Google there’s a bit of a distance between pre-IPO and post-IPO employees... I can’t imagine how it could be otherwise. Were there many people calling it quits a while after the IPO? Yes, I believe most of the first 100 people left the company during the first year. Did you have a party when you left? I just took a nap. Heh. What did you do after taking a break? You started writing the book? I wrote a lot of the book while I still worked there. I moved to Nevada and then did some serious traveling. In another interview, you mentioned you help people during your traveling, and that you started a foundation. What exactly do you do? I have a private foundation that makes grants to different charible causes. It is a lot more gratifying to be able to do some hands on work rather than just writing a check. I have visited many needy sights and helped by just loving people and showing human compassion. I am able to help financially for the basic necessities, food, water and shelter. I am a lover of the Bible and have had the exciting opportunity to help with the discovery of Biblical Relics.
Noah’s Ark. The Ark of the Covenant. Mt. Sinai. These days, do you still keep up with news about Google?
“When I first worked at Google, there was no stress in my life, so I took flying lessons to create some.” Yes, I am on an X-Googler’s site and the pilots at Google site. What’s the pilots at Google site? There are a number of pilots at Google. Eric Schmidt is a pilot. They have a mailing list where flying adventures and info is shared. I love flying! Wow. So you got a pilots license? Since when? When I first worked at Google, there was no stress in my life, so I took flying lessons to create some. And now, of course, Google got their own jet.... Of course... ... and their own landing place shared over at NASA I heard! Everyone loves Google! Some human rights groups have criticized Google in the past though, what do you make of this? If you knew how socially responsible the founders are, there would be no room for criticism. What of Google’s tools do you use today, if any? Google maps, finance, email, this, umm...calendar... I try all the new stuff. Did you also try your hands at Blogger.com? Of Course. That’s where I saw that lovely picture. Which one? Where I was discussed in a way that stabbed my vanity. Do you perhaps refer to a forum comment made on Google Blogoscoped by James... Probably, it’s all becoming foggy lately... What other websites do you check out regularly? Where’s that Ex-Googlers site, by the way? It’s an email set up for ex-googlers that is invitation only. I read the news on Google and keep up with my investments on Google’s terrific finance site. I read sites about my favorite topic, eschatology. What is eschatology? The study of end times. On this mailing list for Ex-Googlers, is there a lot of nostalgia, or criticism of today’s Google? Or what is being talked about there? It’s kind of like a support group. SWS was difficult to maneuver alone. They do talk some about today’s Google and they remember the good ol’ days. What’s SWS? Sudden Wealth Syndrome. Don’t laugh, it’s a serious issue. What are the symptoms? Not fitting in. Having no one to play with. Feeling unuseful. Guilt. Have you actually heard of Ex-Googlers re-applying for a job at Google? I have not. So how do you “treat” SWS? I give. That helps. And just knowing others are experiencing the same feelings, makes you feel a little less nuts. Did you find yourself having a lot of new “friends” after 2005? That’s when you were able to sell stock right? Luckily, I have always been rich with friends. But sadly, some people have a hard time adjusting to you when they perceive that you are suddenly wealthy. I have new business “opportunities” often. ;) I see. Bonnie, anything else you’d like to share with us? Anything I should have asked you? I appreciate your interest and it was fun typing with you. One more question... What is Google’s best-kept secret? :) If there is one, it is best kept. Comment ...

Chain stores see ‘a whopper of a day’
U.S. retailers were upbeat about sales on Black Friday, as discounts helped pack stores nationwide for the opening of the traditional holiday shopping season. “We think it’s going to be a whopper of a day,” said Toys “R” Us CEO Gerald Storch. By midday, that optimism had spread to the markets, helping push stock to their biggest gains of the past week.

ComScore: Yahoo, Microsoft Search Drop In October
Time Warner's sites including AOL saw a teensy drop in US search market share in October as well. Guess who gained?
Nope, not Ask.com. They managed to hold serve from September to October, their 4.7 percent of search share slightly above Time Warner's 4.2 percent.
That leaves Google, atop the search world again, at 58.5 percent of searches according to comScore qSearch 2.0. Yahoo dropped to 22.9 percent, while MSN/Live Search fell out of double digits to 9.7 percent,
These Core Search figures include partner and cross-channel searches, according to comScore. "Searches for mapping, local directory, and user-generated video sites that are not on the core domain of the five search engines are not included in the core search numbers," the firm said.
In October 2007, US searchers made 10.5 billion core searches at the engines. Google picked up over 6.1 billion of those, followed by Yahoo's 2.4 million. All of the top five search engines gained in core search queries for the month.

Ex-AOL CEO Emerges At Clickable
Jonathan Miller has reappeared on the Internet scene, this time as a member of the board of directors for online search ad management startup, Clickable.
Miller's return comes after a rancorous departure from Time Warner, where he served as CEO of AOL. His landing pad, called Clickable, recently debuted their technology at the TechCrunch 40 conference in September.
Clickable also assembled another part of its management team. Max Kalehoff, most recently VP of Marketing at Nielsen Buzzmetrics, will serve in the same capacity in Clickable's corporate structure.
The company touted Miller's addition to the board, citing his extensive knowledge of the online advertising industry. Clickable wants to make search advertising management an easy to use web service.
Doing so will allow Clickable clients to manage ad campaigns on Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, and other providers from a single interface. Miller enthusiastically touted Clickable in a statement, saying, "Clickable represents the next wave of innovation, bringing simplicity, efficiency and transparency to the (small to medium-sized) market."

Scrutinize Google, DoubleClick, Says Congress
DC lawmakers want the Federal Trade Commission to do more than rubber-stamp Google's $3.1 billion DoubleClick acquisition.
Heavy hitters in the Senate on the antitrust subcommittee want the FTC to look closely at the Google-DoubleClick deal. A statement on Senator Orrin Hatch's (R-Ut) website noted the letter, containing the concerns of Hatch, Herb Kohl (D-Wi), and the Senate Subcommittee on Antitrust, Competition Policy, and Consumer Rights.
"This proposed acquisition would combine the world’s largest Internet search company, Google, with DoubleClick, the leading company that places advertising on the Internet. The implications of this merger for the Internet advertising market – and for the Internet as a whole – are profound and potentially far reaching," the Subcommittee said in the letter.
"While we have not reached any definitive conclusion regarding this issue, we urge that you only approve the merger if you determine that it will not cause any substantial lessening of competition with respect to Internet advertising," they continued.
Their message comes a few days after European Competition commissioner Neelie Kroes disappointed Google with the news of an extension of the ongoing review of the purchase in Europe. Google had anticipated closing the deal before the end of 2007, but the EC review won't be completed until April 2008.

What's Interesting In eBusiness & Search?
I subscribe to hundreds of RSS feeds in order to keep up with the world we cover here at WebProNews... eBusiness and search. Here are some of the blog posts and news articles I noticed today that I found interesting. Deceiving Google is becoming very bad for business and PayPerPost isn't happy! >>> Yahoo goes to BlogWorld and writes about it! We were there too... What are the world's most used blogging sites? This blogger provides us with the numbers. Apparently, blogging can fix everything... even Apple! (States prominent blogger) Businesses see no need for Vista. No kidding! Gmail team spills the beans on Gmail features. Rumors of Microsoft buying Yahoo again. Pure speculation but fun to read! 100,000 online bets per second. The technology is interesting but the fact that there are that many bets happing is mind blowing! Imagine how popular this would be if not illegal in the U.S. Calacanis seeks $20 million more which would make his people powered Mahalo search engine worth a staggering $175 million. Optimize your Adwords campaign in ten days or less ... using Google experts for free! Internet becoming vital in fighting Pakistan's President (Dictator?). Girl kills herself over MySpace hoax. Very sad.

The Writers Strike And The Future Of The Net
The Writers Guild of America strike has been an interesting debacle to watch, complete with a host of issues the public might not have thought of before. The inevitable convergence of the Internet and TV is one of them; the continued homogenization of American culture is another.
Fortunately, the revolution is being blogged about. What else would striking writers do? Writers write, right? I especially enjoyed the detail Stephen Falk is providing:
Chet came by for a spell and joined us, and at one point we got in trouble with the cops for working the Walk button too hard, which is a pretty silly offense; no matter how much Michael Tabb wanted to go for the guy's gun and tell him to get back in his car and drive away, Michael complied and laid off the button. (Hey, that last sentence fragment could have been a stage direction from an episode of Lost! They're rubbing off on me.) If this were fiction, you'd commend him for some excellent metaphors: "working the Walk button"; the apt use of "laid off." Anyway, back to the topics in the lede, where I'm supposed to be (WARNING: The rest of this will be very stream-of-consciousness). It's hard not to sympathize – I'm a writer myself, existing on a plane where the majority of writers exist, providing the content for a (hopefully fair) slice of the pie. But the pie is converging to make a much bigger pie, and this band of writers is quite aware of that. Our own David Utter already pointed out Viacom's hypocrisy, suing YouTube for an astronomical billion dollars while saying there's no money to be made on the Internet. It's either one or the other, right? And it's definitely the other. NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox, they all know that, or they wouldn't bother establishing presences on the Web. Hulu, anyone? It's been coming for a while now, and Internet sales are becoming meaningful. But soon (I don't know, five or ten years down the line), TV and Internet will be one. AT&T's U-Verse is the first step on the early road to this. Verizon's fiber-to-the-premises connections is the next. Soon, just as everyone finishing complaining about how slow their DSL and FiOS are compared to the blistering speeds and available in Hong Kong and Japan and Norway, the floodgates will be opened up and no one will have to worry about bandwidth or the prioritization of data packets. Those things will join the Model T, the Victrola, and the pliers we used to turn the dial on the TV. So don't let the Verizons and the Comcasts of the world act like they're in a real pickle when it comes to capacity. Truth be told, those arguments are as BS as the arguments the networks are using to screw their writers out of fair compensation, because there is greed at the center of them. And how does the homogenization of American culture fit in with this overarching chorus of greed? Easy, the telecommunications and cable industries want to do the same thing they've done with television and mobile phone service to the Internet. It's all about standardization, predictability, and profitability. How do you do that? Make it all the same. Make it scalable. Make it a commodity. Remember when there used to be something good on A&E and Bravo? Stuff you couldn't find on other channels? Now what's there? The same homogenized crap the other channels are selling, with a side of dumbing-down for everybody. So where we are with the Internet right now is exactly chaotic enough that the big players want to settle it down to its most predictable and profitable. Right now there are millions of voices in all different forms of media, reachable by search engine. That's because we have a neutral network, where everybody is treated the same. Internet service providers are aware there's less profitability in chaos. Take all that content, squeeze into nice digestible chunks via channels or portals, and charge for every step along the way. Charge to connect. Charge to visit. Charge to deliver content. Charge for premium packages on both sides of the pipe. Charge, charge, charge, charge, charge. And then redirect so that everybody's less fragmented, until everybody's watching the same thing again, just like the good old days. Fewer writers to pay, and many, many more ways to get people to pay you. Net Neutrality, therefore, becomes more than a complex concept only understood and desired by a few geeks that know what's going on. It affects everybody, especially everybody that's quite tired of 300 channels of the same crap.

Google Ready To Bid For Wireless, Maybe
Lots of stories have swirled over the question of will they or won't they bid in the FCC's 700MHz wireless spectrum auction, but Google now looks like a lock to pony up some cash.
If Google bids for the 700MHz spectrum, they could do so with someone else putting up cash alongside the substantial pile of currency the search ad company has accumulated.
The Wall Street Journal summarized several steps Google has taken with regards to becoming a mobile business player. They left out a couple, namely Google's acquisitions of Grand Central and portable graphics engine maker Skia earlier this year.
When Google does take that big step by grabbing some of the valuable 700MHz spectrum, they are as likely to do so with another deep-pocketed bidder alongside them as they are to go solo to the auction. That's speculation by the Journal, citing the usual 'people familiar with the matter', but it makes sense for Google to arrive with a partner.
Serving the public with a GoogleNet wireless network should benefit the mobile-using public with less expensive service and broader availability. But serving the public involves customer service, and no one will ever confuse Eric Schmidt with Bruce Nordstrom in that discussion, as Google prefers to shunt its users to newsgroups rather than take questions by email, much less by phone, about its non-revenue generating products.
If Google chose to do so, it could provide world-class customer service. Financially it makes more sense for them to foist that dirty work onto someone else, which makes a partner scenario more likely once the bidding begins.

Forrester Sees Desktop Linux Scaring Microsoft
A lackluster reception for Windows Vista in the enterprise and some hard work by Linux vendors could be the harbinger of greater Linux adoption on desktops.
And here we thought Wal-Mart's Everex boxes running Linux would have Microsofties reaching for chairs to throw.
Turns out, according to eWeek, that Forrester Research sees Microsoft being threatened where all the money is, in the enterprise market.
"The high volume of client inquiries for Linux on the desktop clearly indicates it's not going away any time soon. Expect Linux to experience growth over the next year as the distributors work hard to make it an enterprise-class offering," Forrester analyst Benjamin Gray said in the report.
Vista, Microsoft's long-awaited replacement for XP, has not flown out of the gate in the business market. Adoption has been far slower than Microsoft would like, as the operating system represents one of its two major revenue streams, the other being the Office productivity suite.
Linux vendors hoping to overcome Microsoft at the operating system level will face several hurdles. Custom applications that require Windows may not run well in emulation on a Linux system, if at all. That would be enough to keep an enterprise from making the switch.

Compete: Ask, Google Gain In Search
The search engine market share for Ask grew incrementally by Compete's figures for October, likely due to the heavy advertising being run by Ask's owner IAC.
Google gained a point to take 68 percent of US search market share, while MSN and Live Search held serve. That's according to numbers provided by metrics firm Compete, which noted the controversial Club Live searches are not included in the MSN/Live figures.
Compete's figures showed Ask picking up 3.9 percent of the market, gaining from 3.6 percent in September. Microsoft's share, MSN/Live combined, remained unchanged from September to October at 9.2 percent.
Yahoo didn't gain or hold its share by Compete's reckoning. "Yahoo! had another tough month with market share dipping to the lowest level yet on a 2% decline in query volume," said Compete's Jeremy Crane. "In the past year Yahoo! web search has lost a full 11.5 points in market share … ouch."
Query volume in October rose for Google, MSN/Live, and Ask, but declined by 30 million month over month at Yahoo.
Believe it or not, that decrease could be a good thing. Yahoo's search team has improved core search, and debuted their Search Assist feature. It could be people aren't needing as many queries on Yahoo as they did in the past.

Adobe CEO Bails Out Fast
Bruce Chizen abruptly became the ex-CEO of Adobe, with current president and COO Shantanu Narayen named to replace him at the beginning of December.
All may not be well in the Adobe household. Chizen's fourteen years with Adobe hit a sudden stop, with the company announcing his departure today.
Chizen will wrap up his seven years as CEO on November 30. Adobe said he will remain on the board through the spring of 2008, and in a strategic advisory capacity through Adobe's fiscal 2008.
Adobe made sunny financial predictions about the remaining fiscal year. They expect revenue at the high end of their $860 million to $890 million predicted range for the fourth quarter, and approximately 13 percent revenue growth through 2008.
Investors were not as cheerful about the news of Chizen's departure, cited by an Adobe spokesperson as a personal decision. Shares of the stock fell to $41.35 in after hours trading, after they had closed at $42.19 today.

WiMax: Sprint, Clearwire Split
The difficulties associated with rolling out wireless service through WiMax may have claimed the nascent Sprint and Clearwire partnership as a victim.
While both companies plan to continue building WiMax solutions separately, news of Sprint pushing Clearwire aside raises more questions about WiMax deployment than it answers.
An AP report said the partnership would have Sprint's WiMax service complementing the smaller Clearwire's offering. The end of the pairing may give Clearwire founder Craig McCaw headaches to complement his sleepless night instead.
"The termination of the agreement certainly dramatically impacts the longer-term financial pressures on Clearwire and its aggressive build-out strategy," analyst Christopher King of Stifel Nicolaus said in the report.
Though the rollout of Xohm, Sprint's WiMax service, appeared in doubt a month ago, later news about Xohm indicated it would continue, despite WiMax booster Gary Forsee being pushed out of Sprint's CEO position.
Few should be surprised at the name mentioned as a possible partner for Clearwire now that Sprint has left the picture. Yes, CNNMoney has invoked the Google name, as Clearwire could handle the deployment and the service while Google does its content and ad serving thing.

Weather Channel Ready For Some Football
The Weather Channel has added forecast videos for NFL cities to its website, as they tap the League's popularity while adding some trivia to their weather reports.
A new feature at Weather.com appeals to the pigskin fans out there. New video segments geared toward the tailgating, cheering hordes descending on stadiums each Sunday liven up the typical forecast.
They have started with three videos for games that could be affected by the drop in temperature now that November is under way.
The segments weigh in at about 90 seconds, plenty of time to find out if the Giants have an advantage over the Cowboys in their upcoming late afternoon rematch this weekend. It turns out the Cowboys aren't so great when the temps drop below 59 degrees: only 4-4 over the last year and a half.
Other videos looks at the Browns-Steelers matchup in Pittsburgh (forecast = chilly), and Vikings-Packers (forecast = astonishingly warm for Lambeau Field).
We would like to see The Weather Channel link videos from the team pages they maintain, when those videos are available. Currently, getting to those videos means finding the link on the 'Weather for NFL Games' page and browsing the menu for them.

Yahoo Wants Mobile Ads, Not The OS
Now that the Google Phone hype has proven an operating system play for mobile devices, Yahoo's strategy of grabbing advertisers for the handset could be a competitive edge.
Yahoo will be pleased with grabbing the brand advertisers who can pay handsomely for mobile display ads, while Google tweaks its phone software and its alliance of partners developing for it.
Reuters said Yahoo's Marco Boerries thinks Google is being distracted by technology instead of focusing on the advertising that provides virtually all of their revenue.
Meanwhile, Yahoo has been able to close deals with several hardware makers to place its oneSearch product on handsets. They signed up Telefonica and its 100 million-plus subscribers, a big win for oneSearch.
Yahoo received praise for its strategy from RBC Capital Markets analyst Jordan Rohan, who suggested to Reuters the strategy of focusing on distribution deals looks like the right approach.
In contrast, Boerries believes Google could run into issues when negotiating revenue sharing with carriers who may end up with a Google-powered phone in their lineups.
That point falls in with our line of thinking about Google, and the way its mobile product can matter if Google runs the network, something they seem to have the resources to accomplish. Right now, Yahoo has some momentum on the mobile side, even if it isn't accompanied by the same hype as Google's work.

Facebook Welcomes Users To The Social (Ads)
Advertising arrives on Facebook in a way that socializes what people do with the products they use, and the relevant ads Facebook can place that cater to those interests.
Facebook's disclosure of its Social Ads received plenty of attention from the tech world, spanning blogs to the tippity-top of mainstream media. The simple summary of what Facebook wants to do came from the company's product manager for Facebook Ads, Leah Pearlman, who blogged about it:
Here's what is changing:
• You now have a way to connect with products, businesses, bands, celebrities and more on Facebook.
• Ads should be getting more relevant and more meaningful to you.
• You now have the option to share actions you take on other sites with your friends on Facebook. The sharing outside actions inside Facebook aspect of their Social Ads involves websites affiliated with Facebook. Pearlman gave the example of someone dropping Buffy The Vampire Slayer into their Blockbuster queue, where the person would be prompted to drop that information into their Facebook News Feed.
Reactions to the new platform have arrived fast and furious on the Internet. Nick Carr called it "the social graft," a play on the social graph meme Facebook uses to describe its network of people and how they connect:
Facebook, which distinguished itself by being the anti-MySpace, is now determined to out-MySpace MySpace. It's a nifty system: First you get your users to entrust their personal data to you, and then you not only sell that data to advertisers but you get the users to be the vector for the ads. Lots of big-name brands, slavering over the prospects of a captive young audience that has fled their TV advertising, will be part of the Social Ads. Deep-pocketed Facebook investor Microsoft stands alongside Coca-Cola, Sony, Verizon, and others.
Now Facebook just has to hope people will continue to trust their friends as they start making recommendations from these affiliated advertisers. 50 million people might not leave overnight, but Facebook isn't immune to a similar site coming along, using the old .edu email address membership requirement Facebook used to have, and pulling in the kinds of members Facebook assumes it will continue to draw.

Google Advanced Search Spam Poses Threat
A sample of a spam message making the rounds demonstrated how someone used a Google URL, with advanced search operators, to send people to a fake retail site. It could be much worse.
We saw the effect of a spam detected by Symantec, where a link in the junk message resolved properly to Google. The spam link used advanced Google search operators to run an "I'm Feeling Lucky" query on Google. The spammers crafted the link, its operators, and the destination site in such a way that the link would automatically go to the site. To the observer looking at the link, it appears to be a typical Google search with some extra query language related to the spam's topic included. That destination site had been registered at the beginning of October, with contact details that look phony. We'll be surprised if orders placed through the site do more than grab some cash from the payment method before it vanishes from the web. After we noted this story earlier, David Cawley of MailChannels dropped a note in the inbox. He pointed out how this misuse of Google's advanced search and the "I'm Feeling Lucky" feature could have been much worse:
The issue is actually more serious than a typical spam redirect. For example, I could craft (a) URL to point to an attachment instead of a website. Since many Windows users have their PCs configured to automatically open PDF attachments, it's possible that it may have opened as soon as you click the link.
Cawley's link did just what he said it would, triggering the launch of Adobe Reader and the opening of the destination PDF. His sample was a benign link to a whitepaper. A malicious link could deliver all kinds of nastiness to an unprotected machine. Earlier today, we suggested Google may want to revisit their past consideration of doing away with the "I'm Feeling Lucky" link. It's unique to Google among the major search engines. The feature's luck may have run out now.

What Would a Non-AP World Look Like?
In a previous article I wrote that the AP is dead, killed by blogs and aggregation. A reader named Chip asked, "And then what? So if AP is dead, what about the content creators? This discussion was prompted by a speech by the CEO of AP here. Chip continued, "Whether it be traditional news reporters, online news outlets or insightful bloggers? The content must come from somewhere. What would a non-AP world look like?" My reply... Chip, I see a news world where news is covered faster than ever before, covered by people that are much more knowledgeable about what they are covering than ever before and covered at a much more granular level than ever before. You can see what is going to happen with general news by looking at what is happening now with tech and Internet industry news. Online news sites covering Internet related technology and business have already succeeded in replacing traditional media and the AP. Bloggers and niche news sites like WebProNews are on the scene covering events as they happen. Tech print magazines like PC World Australia are dying because they are out of date by the time they reach news stands and seem irrelevant to the tech savvy ... unless you are on an airplane! The news that WebProNews, Techmeme, Techcrunch and thousands of online news sites and bloggers are covering only makes it into the AP hours and even days later... or never. The AP cannot compete with the speed of online news sources and bloggers. They also can't compete with the quality and insightfulness of the coverage because niche news sites and bloggers live and breath the industries they cover. Other news areas are close behind tech like politics where major political stories are regularity broken by bloggers. Think Monica Lewinsky and Dan Rather to get the idea. Niche news sites and bloggers with content exposed to millions via linking and news aggregation have changed the landscape of news and commentary. It's not from the top down anymore with reporters telling the people what is news. The people are the reporters ... in war zones, at fires, at conferences, interviewing newsmakers and discovering facts to break big stories. News organizations with massive audiences are still needed but less so than before. Unfortunately for the AP, their job of covering news on the scene and then syndicating it to local newspapers for a fee has been replaced by blogs, online news sites and news aggregation. Chip, for AP this new news world is already here and they cannot afford the price of adapting.

Reuters Photos Gummed Up Google News
Algorithmic accidents at Google News have been blamed for matching the wrong photos to stories, including a really unfortunate one caught by Newsweek.
Putting the right pictures with the right stories has proved a challenge to Google News. That challenge received dramatic illustration when Newsweek grabbed a screenshot of a story about the possible departure of Time Warner CEO Richard Parsons.
Google's algorithmic choice of imagery? A pair of rhesus monkeys.
Ouch.
It also happened with departing Merrill Lynch CEO Stanley O'Neal. Both men, prominent African-American executives, seemingly tagged by Google News in an exceptionally unfortunate way.
"The selection and placement of stories on this page were determined automatically by a computer program," reads the disclaimer at the bottom of Google News. Google's reaction to the misbehaving algorithm, as noted by Newsweek, is almost as surprising as the image matching that took place:
Google acknowledges the situation, but declined to openly discuss details of the primate episode. Surprisingly, it was even unwilling to go on record and explicitly disavow any racist motivation. "While we don't comment on individual stories on Google News," spokesman Gabriel Stricker told NEWSWEEK, "crawling thousands of sites across the globe is a complicated task, and we're confident that the quality of the crawled pages is extremely good for the vast majority of news sources on our site." In an oblique nod to the problem, he cites the need for "more work to be done," adding, "we're always working on improvements to Google News to ensure that the experience for all of our users ... continues to be great." Other stories about different topics likewise generated odd images to match. All of these images come from Reuters, but why those particular images caused such havoc for Google News isn't known.

Facebook Could Still Be Interested In OpenSocial
When Google’s OpenSocial was considered a collection of social networking outsiders, the smart money seemed to favor its competitors, Facebook and MySpace. But now that MySpace has partnered with OpenSocial, we’re left to wonder whether Facebook will join, as well. Facebook’s rising popularity is on its side - people are more likely to follow a social network than some loose collection of apps, and the average user may never even become aware that OpenSocial exists. At the same time, OpenSocial is absolutely dominant in a number-of-users sense; MySpace alone has more members than Facebook.
From an objective standpoint, then, one would have to admit that joining OpenSocial might benefit Facebook more than opposing it. Facebook doesn’t stand to gain as much as some of the organization’s smaller members, but it might not gain anything by standing alone. Still, Facebook appears to be undecided. According to Eric Savitz, a Google rep hinted that the social network had been invited to join OpenSocial. But on Facebook’s behalf, Brandee Barker stated, “Despite reports, Facebook has still not been briefed on OpenSocial. When we have had a chance to understand the technology, then Facebook will evaluate participation relative to the benefits to its 50 million users and 100,000 platform developers.”
If things go one way, we may see an unprecedented amount of cooperation between competing companies. In the other direction, there’s a possible war between Facebook and the rest of the social networking world. Tags: Facebook, OpenSocial, Google

Downtime Can Wreck SEO Efforts
Unreliable access to one's website when spiders come crawling could result in being dropped from a search engine's index.
Downtime can be scarier than any Halloween spookiness for a site publisher. While search engines like Google will send their indexing spiders around multiple times to a site, too many inaccessible results due to downtime could be interpreted as a site that no longer exists.
Getting dropped from Google could make that non-existence very real. A recent post at Royal Pingdom cited the danger of downtime, with the corresponding effect of vanishing from Google's index, ruining whatever SEO work has been done until the spiders come back for a return visit.
They cited Matt Cutts on a previous comment about downtime, where he noted that Google does try to go back and recrawl pages it has dropped previously, in case the site has returned. Rather than relying on Google's return after dropping pages, webmasters need to keep an eye on their sites for downtime issues.
Pingdom modestly suggests its service as one of any number of options for monitoring a service. Site publishers will also want to check out Google's Webmaster Central and the site tools they make available.
